Vaping has been increasingly popular over the past ten years but it has been linked to a range of negative ocular effects. One of the most common concerns is the development of dry eye syndrome.
Dry Eyes
The chemicals and particles in vape aerosols can irritate the ocular surface, leading to reduced tear production and increased tear evaporation. This can result in symptoms such as dryness, itchiness, burning, and blurred vision. Chronic dry eye can further contribute to corneal damage and inflammation and is one of the most common medical conditions we treat at Visionary Eyecare. Beyond dry eye, vaping has also been associated with more serious eye conditions.
Corneal Issues
Studies have shown that exposure to vaping can damage the delicate corneal epithelium, the outermost layer of the cornea. This damage can impair the cornea’s ability to heal and protect the eye, increasing susceptibility to pink eye and corneal ulcers.
Internal Eye Health Changes
Additionally, certain chemicals found in vaping liquids, such as formaldehyde and acrolein, have been tied to oxidative stress and inflammation of the eye. These factors may contribute to the development of more severe conditions like cataracts and macular degeneration. The long-term effects of vaping on eye health are still being investigated, but the potential risks are significant. Early research suggests that chronic exposure to vaping may accelerate the aging process of the eye, leading to premature cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Furthermore, vaping has been associated with increased risk of glaucoma, a condition that can damage the optic nerve.
While the exact mechanisms by which vaping contributes to these conditions are not fully understood, the evidence suggests a clear link between vaping and impaired eye health.
